In the latest of a series of blog posts profiling the contestants in this year’s The Knight’s Apprentice Show, we introduce Valentin-Timur Catuneanu, who hopes to claim the honour of appearing in our prestigious Easter tournament. Who will you be cheering on?
Armour: Milanese export
Hailing from Braila, a city on the banks of the River Danube in Romania’s East, Valentin holds a deep interest in recreating military history. Having moved to Transylvania to read History at university, he joined a local foot combat group with which he toured Romania and even visited Germany.
Having graduated in 2011, Valentin took up horse riding six years ago having met his fiancée, Emma and moved to the UK.
He joined the 15th-century cavalry group Destrier in 2012, with whom he started training under the tuition of some of the world’s most experienced jousters. Ever since he has taken part in Destrier and English Heritage shows, riding in skill-at-arms displays across the country.
In 2014, Valentin was invited to score at the Arundel International Tournament, a position he has been honourably accomplishing ever since. This has provided him with the inspiration to one day aspire to the world of international jousting.
2017 promises to be a very busy year for Valentin as he will be starting up his jousting career, appearing in many of Destrier’s displays, as well as at the Royal Armouries, fulfilling a dream to start jousting.
