Meet Team England

Our Easter Tournament sees jousters from across the globe compete for personal glory and international bragging rights. Meet Team England, represented this year by Andy Deane and Steve Hemphill.

Andy “Old Iron-arm” Deane

As a young man-at-arms, in 1985, Andy strode out in front of an audience for his first ‘Trial by Combat’. Nervous, and with sword and shield in hand, he fought hard and well. That was it – he was hooked. As a boy, Andy only ever wanted to be a knight, and that first combat gave him the thirst to practice all the martial skills of the medieval warrior.

Having ridden horses since the age of four, to joust was the ultimate goal, and in 1993, Andy experienced the thrill of his first tournament as a jouster. In 1995, he joined the famous ‘Royal Armouries’ jousting team in Leeds and had the honour of being captain of that team for many years.

Over the years, Andy has had the privilege of clashing with nearly all the top world jousters, past and present. Since that first combat thirty years ago, Andy has travelled across Europe, Asia, Canada, and America performing and teaching the medieval martial skills needed by a knight to survive in tournament or battle.

Steve Hemphill

Steve first developed an interest in medieval reenactment while attending college in the early 1980s, however, it wasn’t until 2002 that he renewed his childhood passion for horses and began jousting.

Since then, Steve has produced and competed in a number of medieval equestrian events around the world which showcased competitive jousting. He is a member of the Board of Representatives of the International Jousting League and a level 3 Jouster with the International Jousting Association. He is the owner of “Plaisance Ltd.” and the Executive Producer of the “Lysts on the Lake”, a favourite tournament amongst jousters.

When Steve is not involved with jousting he can be found enjoying Dressage, Eventing and Foxhunting with his faithful equine companions, Lucky and Tinkerbell.
